The connection between the body, mind and spirit has been the subject of conventional scientific inquiry for some 20 years. The notion that psychosocial and societal considerations have a role in maintaining health and preventing disease became crystallized as a result of the experiences of a layman, Norman Cousins. In the 1970s, Cousins, then a writer and magazine editor of the popular Saturday Review, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

The unscientific foundation that was laid down by Cousins was taken up by many medical researchers including the academic medical researcher Dr. Lee Berk in the l980s. In earlier work, Berk and his colleagues discovered that the anticipation of “mirthful laughter” had surprising and significant effects. Two hormones – beta-endorphins (the family of chemicals that elevates mood state) and human growth hormone (HGH; which helps with optimizing immunity) – increased by 27% and 87 % respectively in study subjects who anticipated watching a humorous video. There was no such increase among the control group who did not anticipate watching the humorous film.

Google rival hailed as Web 3.0 pioneer

Move over Google, there’s a new search engine in town. Expected to launch later this month, Wolfram Alpha can understand and respond to questions directly instead of displaying a list of search results based on specific search queries that Google is presently known for.
It’s the brainchild of scientist Stephen Wolfram, founder and CEO of Wolfram Research, famous for his previous creations: Mathematica and A New Kind of Science.

Web 3.0 is characterised by ‘intelligent’ web applications that use natural language processing as well as machine-based learning and reasoning, which Wolfram Alpha incorporates.

“I think it’s going to be pretty exciting. A new paradigm for using computers and the web,” wrote Wolfram in a company blog posting that announced the launch of the search engine.

To be honest, everybody thought about their safety,” Ross said of Def Jam and others’ initial reaction to his idea of having Gil Green shoot the video in the hometown of the late, notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. “Everybody got on laptops, Googled. First thing that came up was ‘car bombs,’ ‘hostages,’ this, that and all that. I told them, ‘We got some good friends over there. Researchers have reported 99 per cent success rate in Chinese trials on testosterone as male contraception. It is the largest study conducted anywhere in the world.
The testosterone injections in the phase III trials were tried on 1,045 healthy men, who's ages were between aged 20 and 45 years. All of the men who took part in the study had fathered at least one child within the previous two years and none of their partners had fertility problems. Global accounting convergence plan seen on track

Global accounting rulemakers are still on track with a plan to accelerate convergence between international and U.S. accounting rules, a top international accounting standard-setter said on Monday.
The London-based IASB sets accounting rules, known as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which are used in more than 100 countries.
Accounting rulemakers have been working for years to come up with common accounting standards, but last year decided to accelerate the process as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission proposed a road map that would require U.S. companies to use IFRS instead of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) by 2014.......
